Sophora microphylla, commonly known as kowhai, has a somewhat tangled juvenile form before growing into a tree of about 3-7m. It grows in open forests and on riverbeds throughout New Zealand. The foliage is fern-like with very tiny light green leaflets paired along the leaf stem.
