Kohukohu, kohuhu, black matipo
Pittosporum tenuifolium, commonly known as kohuhu, ia a New Zealand native small tree found through both islands in coastal and lowland forests except westland. Slender erect narrow pyramidal form, branches and twigs quite black. Leaves elliptic, obovate or oblong, to 60 x 25mm, glossy pale green, paler beneath, leathery margins undulating or wavy.
Flowers bright purple at first, changing to almost black, fill the evening air with sweet fragrance from spring through early summer. Woody capsules split open to reveal seeds embedded in a sticky glutinous substance. One of the easiest trees to grow in almost any soil or climate sun or shade.
