Pukatea

Laurelia novae-zelandiae is a very handsome tree found in swampy forests and gullies throughout the North Island and South to Marlborough and the West Coast of the South Island. It is slow growing and will reach 6-10m in the garden. The leathery oval leaves are up to 8cm long and are deep glossy green, with serrated edges and paler undersides.

As the tree matures, the pale brownish grey trunk becomes attractively buttressed at the base. Pukatea requires plenty of moisture and is ideal for planting in damp areas or on the edges of lakes and streams. Propagation by seed.
