Waikato Expressway
Plant supply across seven sections of the Waikato Expressway.
The Waikato Expressway is a Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency programme spanning approximately 100km of new highway, running from south of the Bombay Hills to south of Cambridge with a corridor out to Te Rapa, Hamilton. Built over more than a decade, the expressway was constructed across seven sections: Longswamp, Rangiriri, Huntly Bypass, Ngaruawahia Bypass, Te Rapa Bypass, Hamilton Bypass, and Cambridge Bypass. Plant supply across the programme required eco-sourced native species suited to a wide range of site types, including embankments, riparian areas, and stormwater features.
Supply for a project of this scale required consistency, coordination, and the capacity to run multiple large contracts simultaneously. Each section had its own delivery schedule, site conditions, and planting requirements. The Rangiriri section involved the iwi, given the cultural significance of the Rangiriri Pa site.
Kauri Park supplied all plant stock across the seven contracts, a total of 3,780,000 plants delivered in full and on time. Supply was managed using our own logistics fleet, with over 700 truckloads of plants delivered directly to site. The scale of our nursery operations meant we could maintain supply continuity across multiple active contracts and adapt to changing civil timelines. Plants were grown and hardened for roadside and riparian conditions, and the stock established to canopy quickly, reducing long-term maintenance requirements.
The completed programme delivered 3,780,000 plants across approximately 100km of new expressway, supporting long-term establishment along one of New Zealand's most important transport corridors.
